The upper fans sit at a slight angle, and are meant to complement the rear/side units.

That geometry is thrust vectoring for transition and control:

  • The upper array provides most of the lift in hover and can be tilted a few degrees forward to start adding a horizontal thrust component as the vehicle accelerates.
  • The rear/side ducts are mounted at a complementary angle so their thrust line helps with pitch trim, yaw (the original “rudder” function), and extra forward thrust once the vehicle is moving. Differential power between left and right rear units still gives yaw authority; a small change in their tilt or power also adjusts the pitching moment so the upper fans do not have to do all the work.
  • Together they keep the net thrust vector close to the center of gravity during the hover-to-cruise transition, which reduces the control-surface or attitude changes the flight computer has to make.
